Wednesday October 3rd will see Revenue Online Services taking to Carlow’s streets, and availing of Carlow’s WiFi network, to show ordinary taxpayers how to file their taxes online.

As part of the South East Enterprise Week, taxpayers in Carlow will be free to use the facilities in the specially provisioned Computer Gym in Carlow Town. Throughout the day, the specially commissioned Computer Gym will be located at Plás na Saoirse, in the centre of the town. The Gym will contain WiFi laptops for members of the public to receive demonstrations from Revenue Online Services. Members of the Carlow WiFi project group will also demonstrate the use of other commonly held mobile wireless devices such as palm tops and VOIP phones illustrating the diverse uses of the WiFi network.

The Revenue Online Day will be the first in a series of promotional activities designed to encourage members of the public to fully exploit the potential of the Carlow WiFi Town. Future events will involve major web-based promotions from the likes of big names like eBay, Google, Microsoft and Intel. All of these events will demonstrate the potential application of the WiFi network creating an awareness of the network and its uses.

The first of its kind in Ireland, the network is deployed on the Carlow fibre optic Metropolitan Area Network, leveraging Government investment in the MAN Programme.

Conal Henry, CEO of e|net commented, “e|net is delighted with the development of the Carlow WiFi network. Today’s promotion by Revenue Online Services is a great demonstration of the benefits that the wireless town can bring and is the first of a number of welcome promotions. Both service providers on the wireless network, Brisknet and Aptus, are providing an excellent service for people in Carlow town and are encouraged by take-up levels to date.”

Mary McEvoy, Economic Promotion and Development Officer for Carlow County Council says that ‘Carlow town, being the first town in Ireland with a WiFi network is a key advantage to helping attract industry into the County and making our current businesses more competitive. Carlow Local Authorities are pleased to support this event to help promote the network and demonstrate its many valuable uses. Carlow is once again leading the way in new efficiencies for businesses.
